Twin City Perl Workshop 2011
This weekend we had another Twin City Perl Workshop organized by Vienna.pm and Bratislava.pm.
Things I learned:
- "Cooperation" should be spelled "coöperation" (Metal Umlauts FTW!)
- If you're doing an event in an open hackerspace like Metalab it's completely possible that a random visitor will give an impromptu lightning talk
- I should add FAQs and tutorials to my documentation
- It's surprisingly easy to write a web browser in Perl using Webkit - and to use the same "browser" to convert HTML-based slides to PDF
- Rakudo Perl looks cooler every time I hear about it (but I still haven't tried it for real)
- Airports make for better programming metaphors than animals.
- People do come up with the most crazy templating horrors
I also gave a talk, or rather a rant on why I hate logging.
Besides talking about Perl, we also had lot's of nice food & drinks (Club Mate!), about a ton of sweets provided by lichtkind, a nice class-trip like trip by train to Bratislava and back, and a Vienna.pm General Assembly.
Oh, one more thing: During the train ride to Bratislava we discovered that from 9 Perl hackers on the train, 7 (or 6?) are regular and/or hardcore cyclists. I know that a few other Perl people are into cycling, but I'm still not sure if that was just a weird Viennese coincidence or a global trend...
